Preventing Hepatitis B at Home and in Personal Care Settings
Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (AM). In the United States, about one in 20 people has been infected with HBV, one-third of them say they do not know how they became infected. Risky Items: While many states have laws to protect consumers from infections in commercial tattoo parlors, personal care salons and piercing shops, many states do not routinely inspect these businesses to make sure that safety precautions are followed.
Preventing Mother-to-Child Infection
Pregnant women who are infected with the hepatitis B virus (AM) often infect their newborns because of the HBV present in their blood and body fluids. About 40 percent of infants born to HBV-infected mothers in the United States become infected unless they are immediately vaccinated and treated with the hepatitis B antibodies called immune globulin (HBIG).
What Are the Occupational Risks of Hepatitis B?
Many people infected with the hepatitis B virus (AM) wonder if their bloodborne infection poses a health risk to others in workplace settings, such as offices, factories, health care facilities, schools or daycare centers. They wonder if it is necessary to disclose their infection to protect co-workers, students or patients.
